These are interesting times for the Power Squadron, both locally and nationally. Did you know the average age of membership in the USPS is upper the 60’s, lower 70’s? Your squadron fits that mold, if not a little older, based on the number of previously very active members who have decided they need to back off a bit on their squadron activities. Frankly, as you can imagine, this demographic does not bode well for the long-term prospects and sustainability of your Squadron.
But with your help, we can change this trend. We all need to promote and encourage the active participation of younger boaters. As I am reminded, your squadron was started by a group of active boaters in their 30’s. While yes, life is different now than it was in the 1960’s, there is really no reason why we can’t get younger boaters involved in our Squadron.
In early spring you will be getting a call from a bridge member just to have a conversation about your Squadron and your desired involvement. Be thinking about how you want to serve to help continue the quality traditions of your squadron of boating education and safety, community involvement and good fun on our waterways. Be thinking about who you can ask to get involved in our Squadron.
We can’t take the survival of the organization we all enjoy being a part of for granted. Do you have children, or grandchildren, who may be interested in joining? Do you have friends who want to learn more boating skills while socializing with other boaters? If so, please take the time to ask them if they want to join. Your Bridge officers would be glad to help you recruit them. Let’s all work together to make sure your Squadron remains strong for another 50 years!
Your Bridge is meeting this week to work on the 2017 calendar. Be on the lookout for it on our new web site. Keep up with the news of your squadron on your new Dockside. (If you know someone who would be interested in our news, forward the Dockside onto them, and let us know their email address.) We look forward to participating with you all in this year’s events, making sure we all have a great boating year and growing our organization.
Your Bridge looks forward to serving with you this year. Happy and safe boating!
