The History of Tri-Cities Boating Club

Tri-Cities Boating Club, formerly The Johnson City Sail and Power Squadron, has been in existence for over 50 years, having celebrated our golden anniversary in 2012. It was founded by a group of young area boaters who wanted to learn more boating skills like navigating, long distance cruising, and safe boat handling. Their intent was to learn these skills in a fun, social environment that fostered cooperative learning and good friendships. The United States Power Squadron’s model (now “America’s Boating Club”) was the perfect fit.

Over the years, we have provided many fun social events for our members, ranging from cruises in Florida, the Chesapeake, and the BVI’s, to closer-to-home raft-ups on area lakes and other on- and off-the-water activities, such as Christmas parties, chili-cookoffs, and poker runs, creating a social environment for the members that fosters the fun and skill development that provides the enjoyment of boating.  We have also provided invaluable opportunities for boaters in our area to experience classroom and on-water training as we offered education in many aspects of boating.  We have planned and participated in community service projects and events as well.

The growth of recreational boating in our area began as TVA completed dams creating a wealth of area suitable for boating.  People taking to the water in boats created a need for education on boat operations and water safety.  The United States Power Squadrons had the educational programs that were needed.  The Johnson City Power Squadron was chartered in 1962 as an offshoot of the Kingsport Power Squadron, becoming the third squadron in Tennessee.   The Kingsport Squadron gave up its charter in 1989 and joined the Johnson City squadron to form the great boating organization we enjoy today.   Our squadron officially changed its name to Johnson City Sail and Power Squadron in 2012.  To emphasize our desire to serve the boating needs of all boaters – power, sail, paddle, etc. we are in the process of changing our formal name to the Tri-Cities Boating Club.
