The Johnson City Country Club was the scene of a gala occasion on January 14, 2017 –  the JCSPS Annual Meeting and Change of Watch ceremony, kicking off the Squadron’s 55th year. The guests enjoyed the opportunity to catch up with old and new friends during the social hour.

Commander Marc Nachman called the meeting to order at 7 PM and led the Pledge of Allegiance and the USPS Pledge. Chaplain Ed Lockett conducted the In Memoriam to recognize those who crossed the bar in 2016: Jim Kalogeros, Ken Verneuille and Don Sinn. Following the invocation we enjoyed a delicious dinner of herb baked chicken and beef tips in mushroom gravy with all the accompaniments. During dinner, a slide show ran showing pictures from the many fun JCSP events over the past year – wow, what a busy year!

After dinner, Commander Marc introduced our District 17 representative P/D/C Bob Heck and his wife Marty. Marty is involved in education at the National level and provided us with a nice update on upcoming improvements. Bob then dismissed the current JCSPS Bridge with his thanks to Marc and his team for a job well done.  Bob talked about the Chief Commander’s vision for USPS including some cultural changes to make our organization more attractive to younger members. We can look forward to further strengthening of the USPS brand as well as reinforcing the tag line that is true for so many of us: “Come for the education, stay for the friends.”

Next, the annual meeting was conducted. The slate of 2017 nominees were proposed by Past Commander Steve Brumit on behalf of the nominating committee and were duly elected. Past District Commander Heck then swore in our new Commander, Steve Scheu, followed by the rest of the 2017 Bridge. Commander Scheu was presented with his Commander’s flag and custody of the Marshall T. Herron Centennial Gavel. Past Commander Nachman was all smiles as he received his Past Commander’s flag from Steve.

Our new Commander took a few minutes to talk about some interesting plans, including potentially a new name for our Squadron and the new Dockside format which drives readers to our website so they can learn more about all that JCSPS has to offer. Commander Steve also talked about hosting the District Conference this fall before adjourning the meeting.

We are fortunate to have a dedicated and enthusiastic Bridge at the helm for the upcoming year!
