Spring Dinner at JRH Brewery

by Glenn Freshour Our Squadron’s A/O wants to remind our members that The Spring Dinner meeting is this Friday, May 19 at JRH Brewing, 458 W. Walnut St. Johnson City. We will be meeting at 1800 hours. Dinner we be provided by Foodie Fiction. As you recall, members had a great time last year at this venue. So come one, come all for Grog, Grub and Good Fellowship. This is a great way for visitors to check out our boating club. Here’s the Foodie Fiction menu. National Safe Boating week will soon be here and as usual our squadron is actively participating. Saturday May 20, the first day of the National Safe Boating Week, members of our Tri-Cities Boating Club will be on duty at one of our Sponsor’s, Laurel Marina on South Holston Lake. We will have a banner up and VSC (Vessel Safety Check) inspector’s will be on the dock promoting safety and the Club.  To you members with boats at Laurel, this would be a great time to get your boat inspection renewed. Remember, the T.W.R.A looks for our stickers on boats as they know those boats meet all State safety requirements. Our Safety Officers will also be on site offering support and safety information at Fish Springs and Lakeshore Marina on May 27. Make sure you tell your friends about this great opportunity to get their boat inspected. As one...

Report From the Commander

Message from your Squadron’s Commander- Steve Scheu Welcome to the 2017 boating year! Thanks to everybody who came out for a good dinner, fellowship and fun to welcome your new Bridge officers: Commander – Steve Scheu Executive Officer – Fred Pinney Administrative Officer – Glen Freshour Treasurer – Jimmy Carrol Secretary – Anita Remme Educational Officer – Rich Moakler These are interesting times for the Power Squadron, both locally and nationally. Did you know the average age of membership in the USPS is upper the 60’s, lower 70’s? Your squadron fits that mold, if not a little older, based on the number of previously very active members who have decided they need to back off a bit on their squadron activities. Frankly, as you can imagine, this demographic does not bode well for the long-term prospects and sustainability of your Squadron. But with your help, we can change this trend. We all need to promote and encourage the active participation of younger boaters. As I am reminded, your squadron was started by a group of active boaters in their 30’s. While yes, life is different now than it was in the 1960’s, there is really no reason why we can’t get younger boaters involved in our Squadron. In early spring you will be getting a call from a bridge member just to have a conversation about your Squadron and...
